What We Do
Renegade Materials stands as the supplier of non-MDA polyimide prepreg materials tailored for high-temperature service in defense and commercial aircraft structures, as well as propulsion systems. Our History
Founded in 2008 as a private company focusing on high temperature polyimide prepreg systems, Renegade Materials Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of Teijin Holdings in August 2019. Since then, Renegade Materials corporation has expanded from high temperature polyimides to a diverse line of high-performance aerospace materials including resins, prepregs, adhesives, and hybrid materials.
With the steadfast support of Teijin, our company has more than doubled both production capacity and personnel within the past five years. We take immense pride in collaborating with our customers to develop optimal solutions for their application needs. We look forward to further growth and success with them in the near future.
Our Facilities
Renegade Materials’ production campus comprises two world-class facilities strategically situated south of Dayton in Miamisburg, OH. The first facility, purpose-built in 2007 within one of the Miami Valley’s newest Manufacturing Centers, spans 26,000 sq. ft. This multifaceted building accommodates manufacturing operations, testing laboratories, warehousing for raw materials and finished goods, and office space. Our second facility, inaugurated in 2019 and situated in the same corporate park, expands our footprint with an additional 40,000 sq. ft. designed to offer similar flexibility of use.

Leadership
Dr. Robert Gray
Dr. Robert Gray, President of Renegade Materials, is widely recognized as a science and technology leader in the field of high-temperature polymer composites. In 2007, Dr. Gray co-founded Renegade Materials along with other composite industry veterans and high-temperature materials experts. His role as corporate visionary provides leadership and spurs technical innovation motivated by a commitment to the development and commercialization of the next-generation of high-performance composite materials.
Dr. Gray earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton in 1982. He started his career at Union Carbide, conducting research and development studies on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and pitch-based carbon fibers. In 1984, He received a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Cleveland State University. In 1985, Dr. Gray began employment at GE Aircraft Engines (Cincinnati, Ohio), where his research was focused on polyimide materials science and composite technology. The position involved working with universities, government laboratories, and the aerospace industry to advance the technology for heat-resistant polymers, preprags, fibers, coatings, and adhesives. Candidate materials were scaled-up into production, fabricated into composite components, and successfully engine tested.
In 1993, Dr. Gray co-founded Maverick Corporation as President and Director of Technology. He consults throughout the aerospace industry with regard to the synthesis and application of polyimide resins, coatings, molding compounds, prepregs and the processing of high temperature materials. Dr. Gray received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, in 1995. His dissertation centered on “High-Temperature Composite Technology.”
Dr. Gray is the co-inventor on five U.S. patents regarding high-temperature composites, processes, and coatings. His leadership skills enhanced by his 35+ years of experience in high temperature composites for aerospace markets has greatly benefited Renegade Materials Corporation.
Eric Collins
Mr. Eric Collins, Chief Executive & Financial Officer of Renegade Materials, is well known as a leading expert in the commercialization and manufacturing of high temperature composite materials and compression-molded, wear-resistant components for aerospace and industrial applications. Mr. Collins and other composite industry veterans and high temperature composite experts co-founded Renegade Materials in 2007. Besides handling the financial duties for the company, his major responsibilities include strategic planning, new business developmen and legal affairs.
Mr. Collins earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in 1985 and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati in 1995.
Mr. Collins started his career at IBM Corporation in 1983 where he worked on improving the electrical and mechanical properties of ceramic and polymer substrates. In 1985, Mr. Collins joined GE Aircraft Engines. His nine years of engineering experience at GE included development of carbon-carbon composite technology, development and commercialization of next generation stealth material technology and development and scale-up of advanced ceramic and high temperature polymer composite technology. Mr. Collins is co-inventor on several U.S. patents related to advanced ceramic and polymer composite materials.
In 1993, Mr. Collins co-founded Maverick Corporation where he also currently holds the positions of CEO and CFO. Maverick Corp. is recognized as a world leader in the development and manufacture of high temperature composite polymers. Maverick Corp’s materials have been qualified to aerospace specifications since 1994.
Laura Gray
Laura J. Gray, Renegade Materials’ General Manager and Co-Founder, studied Business Administration at Northeastern University (Boston, MA). Her 35+ year career has focused on the development of applications for fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials in aerospace and other industries. Her background includes extensive experience with aircraft programs integrating structures design, materials selection and characterization, parts fabrication and process development from qualification through production phases. Ms. Gray has focused her efforts on the identification of opportunities to insert composite material technologies into applications with excellent growth potential, from development through to the successful transition to production. Her background involving the application and processing of polymer materials enhances her ability to create new applications for resin and prepregs. Ms. Gray has established vast customer contacts and credibility within the composites community, and is an active member of SAMPE (Society for the Advancement of Materials and Processing Engineering), and the High Temple Workshop.
Ms. Gray is well-recognized in the composite industry for her successful business development work at Ferro Corp; SP Systems, and FiberCote Industries. In 2001, Ms. Gray joined YLA Inc. to lead the development of high-temperature materials, compression molded parts, contract R&D services and qualifications. In 2006, Ms. Gray joined forces with Maverick Corp., establishing a market leadership position in the development and manufacturing of high service temperature polyimide resins, prepregs and molding compounds for military and commercial aircraft. Her partnership with the Maverick principals has resulted in the visioning and successful start-up of Renegade Materials Corporation, where she is responsible for managing programs, all manufacturing operations, quality and administrative systems.
Kory Abbitt
Katherine O. (Kory) Abbitt, Renegade’s Director of Business Development and Continual Improvement Leader, has a B.S. in Engineering Science Mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1985) and an M.S. in Materials Engineering from the University of Dayton (1993). Her 30+ year career in the composites aerospace industry has included engineering, program management, sales and business development leadership positions.
Ms. Abbitt has experience with most composite manufacturing processes including autoclave and press molding, infusion and out of autoclave processes as well as preforming. Her background includes extensive work with thermosetting prepregs and adhesives, infusion resins and films and engineered preforms with a focus on the integration of these material forms into key composite structures for both the military and commercial aerospace markets. Ms. Abbitt has participated in all stages of introducing new, innovative composite materials into production including product development and/or selection, qualification and successful transition from development into production. She also maintains excellent program knowledge of key programs in the global aerospace marketplace.
Ms. Abbitt began her career in 1985 as a Materials & Processes Engineer at GE Aircraft Engines (now GE Aviation) specifying/qualifying composite materials for engine applications. She is well-recognized in the aerospace composites industry for her successful sales and business development work. Her experience in this area includes prepreg, carbon fiber and preforming with positions at U.S. Polymeric, Fiberite, Cytec, A&P Technology and Hexcel. In 2009, Ms. Abbitt joined Park Electrochemical Corp. as Vice President/Sales & Marketing-Americas. She led the aerospace composites sales and market development efforts resulting in new qualifications of Park materials at key Aerospace OEM’s. Over the course of her career, Ms. Abbitt has positioned companies for qualifications resulting in over $200M of new, profitable business. Ms. Abbitt joined Renegade Materials Corporation (Ohio’s first composite prepreg manufacturing business) in 2011 where she is tasked with building upon the vision of Renegade Materials’ founders, that of being a world class prepreg manufacturer focused in high temperature and other innovative polymeric materials. She has recently taken on a second role at Renegade Materials, that of Continual Improvement Leader. In this capacity, Ms. Abbitt leads all of Renegade's Continual Improvement (CI) Teams. Current CI Teams are focused on FOD Awareness and Prevention, Defect Flag Reduction, Equipment Efficiency and Improved Mix Instructions.
Susan Robitaille
Susan M. Robitaille, Renegade’s Technical Director and Co-Founder, has over 35+ years of product development experience, formulating resin systems and manufacturing processes for composite materials. She is widely regarded as an innovative technology leader in the composites industry. Ms. Robitaille earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Manufacturing Engineering from California State University, Chico, CA. Her career has included 14-years as Technical Director at YLA, Inc., an advanced composite materials producer in Benicia, CA; preceded by 11-years as a Research Specialist and Project Manager at Hexcel Corporate Research and Development (Livermore, CA) working specifically in new composite materials product development. Ms. Robitaille holds several patents on the development of low energy curing epoxy resins and composite repair, and she has recently commercialized affordable and easy-to-process UV and LED energy curable prepregs for galvanic barriers and machining ply restoration used in aircraft production.
Ms. Robitaille brings extensive experience in the formulation and development of BMI, Cyanate Ester and Epoxy polymer resin systems for a wide variety of manufacturing processes used in the aerospace, defense, space, commercial and high-performance racing yacht industries. Product forms include fiber-reinforced prepregs, adhesives, molding compounds, infusion resins, pastes, syntactic foam, and precision resin films. She has been developing and demonstrating commercial scale composite prepregs for very large, Out-of-Autoclave cured structures for twenty years.
Ms. Robitaille has vast experience specializing in the “tuning” of electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties of composite materials, and she is well recognized as a leading formulator of nano-tailored composite systems for multi-functional prepregs and molding compounds.
At Renegade Materials, she provides technical leadership in all aspects of product development, design, testing, failure analysis and qualifications. The strength and broad scope of her experience allows her to achieve the important balance between material properties, manufacturing efficiency and affordability.
